Strong & Richardson named to All-Star TeamNovember 16, 2010
Vancouver, WA -- Sophomore libero Rachael Strong and freshman outside hitter Taylor Richardson were selected to the South Region Second Team All-Stars as announced by the NWAACC Tuesday morning.
Also making the list as honorable mentions were freshmen outside hitter Haylee Schaab and setter/DS Kylee Bellamy.
"I was really proud of Rachael and Taylor to receive 2nd team all league, said head coach Kathie Woods. "We have a lot of talent on our squad but finishing in 4th place in the region does limit what recognition we get. For Rachael and Taylor to be recognized and represent Clackamas is great. Also having Haylee and Kylee on the recognition list is an honor. I am proud of all of my girls."
Strong will represent the Cougars in the Sophomore All-Star games on November 21st at Mt. Hood CC. Match times are 10:30 am and 12:00pm. The NWAACC Championship match will follow at 3pm.
Cougar of the Week "This last week Kristin Best received Cougar Player of the Week against Linn-Benton, said head Kathie Woods
"Kristin had 6 kills out of 12 attempts with no errors. She also had 3 blocks. Kristin is really working on going to the net hard on both blocking and hitting. She is improving and we are really needing her right now on offense as we prepare for NWAACC's this week."

Cougs had Roadrunners on the ropesNovember 10, 2010 Albany, Ore. -- Clackamas closed out the regular season needing one more win to make them .500 in the region going into the playoffs. The Cougars opened the match with a 25-21 first set win and had a 2-1 lead after three. Linn-Benton fought back to win the final two for the 21-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-18, 15-10 Roadrunner victory [box].
"Tonight's match was another repeat of a hard fought game but coming out on the short end, commented head coach Kathie Woods. "We played hard but had trouble staying focused. We need to have a leader on the floor that will refuse to let this team settle for close."
Taylor Richardson led the attack with 17 kills on an 11% kill efficiency while Kylee Bellamy dished 27 assists on a 21% efficiency. Rachael Strong's 23 digs led of quartet of Cougar defender's who had double digit digs.
The Cougars will next face North Region Champion Whatcom on November 18 in the NWAACC Championship Tournament at Mt Hood CC in Gresham, OR. Match is set for a 2pm start [bracket].
Cougs close home regular season with good performance against 4th-ranked SaintsNovember 7, 2010
Oregon City -- Clackamas played great defense and was in the match against the fourth-ranked Saints, but a so-so hitting percentage continued to be the Achilles’ heel that made the difference in a win or a loss Friday night.
"Tonight's match was a hard fought contest, said head coach Kathie Woods. "The Cougs fought tough and played tenacious defense and almost pulled out an upset. We needed to play at this intensity as we get ready for the championship tournament."
Haylee Schaab led the offense with 15 kills on a 20% efficiency while Taylor Richardson added 14 more on a 13% kill efficiency. Kylee Bellamy, who assumed the setting duties from an injured Courtney Pattock, had 33 assists on a 28% efficiency. Libero Rachael Strong again turned in a solid defensive performance with 36 digs while Shauna Salopek rejected several Hood kill attempts for four recorded blocks.
"Rachael was phenomenal on defense with 36 digs, exclaimed Woods "She was all over the place and without her leadership out there we would not have been so close. Shauna was ill, but played with relentless pursuit. Kylee stepped in for an injured setter, and proved again how valuable she is to our club. She is most comfortable in the setting position and will help us out best there. With Linn-Benton this next week as our last league match, we are hoping to take it to continue our momentum in to NWAACC's."
The loss didn't completely damper the Cougar's spirits as word spread that Chemeketa defeated SW Oregon to help secure the Southern Region's fourth playoff spot for Clackamas.
"Chemeketa beat SW Oregon tonight which qualified us for NWAACC championship tournament, added Woods. "We can now focus our attention on that and move forward onto these final two weeks of the season."
The Cougars will close of the 2010 regular season at Linn-Benton on Wednesday, November 10th. Match time is set for a 7pm start.
Salopek named Cougar Player of the WeekNovember 2, 2010
Oregon City, OR -- Freshman middle hitter Shauna Salopek was selected by the coaching staff as the Cougar Player of the Week for week ten.
In seventeen sets, Salopek had a season best 23 blocks, 11 being solos, for a very solid 1.35 blocks per set average.
"Shauna is working hard every day and always has a great attitude, even when we get our losses, commented head coach Kathie Woods. "She is consistent in everything she does. Our team is so much more complete with Shauna. She is a coach's dream come true. I am very proud of how far she has come in such a short time."
Cougs win 2 of 5 at Halloween ClassicNovember 1, 2010
As a team, CCC only mustered a 11% kill efficiency for the tournament with the top two outside hitters only managing to turn in efficiencies of 12 and 15 percent..
Taylor Richardson led the offense with 70 kills in 17 sets and added 58 digs. Courtney Pattock set up 130 kills and had 50 digs. Rachael Strong was stellar on defense with 98 kills, an impressive 5.76 digs per set average. Shauna Salopek and Kristen Best were tough in the middle, accounting for 41 of the team's 44 blocks. Salopek had 11 solos and turned in a solid 1.35 blocks per set.
"Shauna had a good tournament, said coach Kathie Woods. "She played hard and is improving each and every match. As far as the rest of the tournament......highs and lows. We did outscore our opponents by 7 points and yet we lost 3 matches. That tells me we are close to the wins and just need to keep our focus on what we can do instead of what mistake we just made. When we accomplish that we will be on the win side and still outscoring our opponents. Rachael again played very competitive and kept the ball off the floor with her intense defense. Kylee also stepped in toward the end of the tournament and helped Courtney out with setting. Kylee is strong in that she can play anywhere she is needed. You may be seeing her in that setting role again as we continue to try and figure out just which lineup is best for this year's Cougar squad."
CCC (4-4, 20-22) will return to region play against fourth-ranked Mt Hood Saints (8-0, 31-7) at home on Friday, October 5th. Match time is set for a 7pm start.
Storm cool off the CougsOctober 27, 2010 Salem, OR -- Seventh-ranked Chemeketa came to play, but the Cougars simply weren't on their A game as the Storm won in three 25-19, 25-13, 25-20.
"I'm very disappointed," a dejected head coach Kathie Woods expressed. "It's like night and day the way we played tonight and the way we fought hard this last weekend. It's been a roller coaster season."
Haylee Schaab and Taylor Richardson had 7 kills apiece, but the Cougars had a tough time with errors and only managed a 10.5 percent hitting efficiency as a team. Courtney Pattock turned in 19 assists while Schaab led the defense with 9 digs. The passing game also suffered as CCC only had a team average serve-receive of 1.48 [box].
"We just didn't play with intensity and enthusiasm.. A major culprit was the fact that we just didn't move our feet and make effective passes. If we don't pass well, we can't set-up the offense and that was obvious in our play tonight. We'll work on things this week and hopefully get back on track."
The loss drops the Cougs a half match behind Linn-Benton for third place in the Southern Region standings.
Clackamas next travels cross town to Gresham on Friday and Saturday to take part in the Dorian Harris Halloween Classic. The Cougs will open with pool play Friday against Highline at 2pm followed by Bellevue at 4pm. Saturday's matches with be bracket play.

Oregon City, OR -- Freshman outside hitter Taylor Richardson was selected as the Southern Region Defensive Player of the Week Tuesday.

"I am very happy for Taylor," said head coach Kathie Woods "She has been steadily improving with her aggressiveness and consistency. Her intensity is one of the reason she is improving. She is growing and being able to focus on her role. This has made her a better defensive player and so I was happy to see her get the honor for her hard work."
Update on Cougars season honorsOct 25, 2010 October Cougar Players of the Week October 25th: Kristin Best - "Kristin has been steadily improving and is much more aggressive in the middle. She has helped us balance out our attacks and I am proud of Kristin for coming out of her comfort zone for the sake of the team. She is a quiet girl who is becoming loud on the court." October 18th: Rachael Strong - "Rachael played her best ball as a Cougar this past week. She played hard all weekend and really showed some maturity in the desire category. She went for every ball on defense and led the team in digs. She was loud and aggressive, which was what this team needed more of. She also continues to be one of our strongest servers."

Cougars back to .500 with weekend wins
October 25, 2010 Oregon City, OR -- The Cougars came into the weekend needing wins to stay on track to make the NWAACC playoffs next month and only lost a single set in pair of matches against Umpqua and SW Oregon.
In Friday's Sponsor Night match, the Cougs took down Umpqua in four sets 25-16, 19-25, 25-19, 25-21 then followed up with a three set sweep of SW Oregon 25-11, 25-19, 25-14 during Richelle Heacock Day on Saturday.
Haylee Schaab and Taylor Richardson led the attack against Umpqua with a combined 39 kills with Courtney Pattock dishing 44 assists. Richardson was also a key factor on defense with 20 digs followed closely by Rachael Strong's 19. Richardson also turned in a solid 2.41 serve-receive on 17 attempts [box].
Saturday's match against the Lakers was much the same as Richardson and Schaab lead the offense with a combined 24 kills. Pattock turned in 27 assists while Schaab and Strong patrolled the defense for a combine 22 digs. This time it was Strong that was hot on serve-receive with a game high 2.54 on 13 attempts [box].
Head Coach kathie Woods had much to say on the weekend "This weekends matches were a turning point for the Cougs. Today's match against SWOCC was played hard and intense. We picked up our defense and played much more aggressively. I was very proud of the girls. We have been practicing hard and fighting from the ground up and I feel like some of that hard work is starting to pay off. We have a big week this next week to keep working hard and see more rewards. Courtney continued her streak on solid serving. She placed the serves very well and used a variety of serves to keep the pressure on. Courtney is also starting to move and square up better so she has more choices in her setting. It always helps when your passes are spot on too. Rachael has continued to really pick up her game and is getting faster and faster on her feet. Our defense is picking up and Rachael has been a big leader in this effort. Our outsides (Taylor and Haylee) have been consistent and have varied their hits to create more confusion for our opponents. Our middles are starting to get involved and that will really help out our attack. Ali King is a silent weapon in that she will not let a ball drop. This has been key in our comeback.
We had a great celebration with Richelle there for us today. We honored her and her family and were able to give her a donation to help in her medical expenses. It was a fun day and a great day to be a Cougar! I was very proud!"
The wins give the Cougars a 4-3 Southern Region record, tied with Linn-Benton for third and an 18-18 overall record on the season [standings].
CCC will next have a big match with second place Chemeketa in Salem on Wednesday, October 27th at 7pm. Clackamas will also travel cross town to Gresham on Friday and Saturday to take part in the Dorian Harris Halloween Classic. The Cougs will open with pool play Friday against Highline at 2pm followed by Bellevue at 4pm. Saturday's matches with be bracket play.
Cougars stumble at Treasure ValleyOctober 19, 2010 Oregon City, OR -- Clackamas came into the tournament with higher expectations, but were tripped up by several teams that edged the Cougars in key sets.
CCC opened against Whatcom and played two close sets 25-19, 24-26 before bowing to the Orcas the last two sets 17-25, 20-25. The Cougs rebounded to defeat Centralia 25-11, 25-14, 25-18, before losing to top-ranked Blue Mountain in four. CCC played tough in the first two sets against BMCC 23-25, 25-21 but then seem to disappear in the final two sets 11-25, 11-25.
In Saturday's action, The Cougs lost two matches that went to a fifth set and one that they lost in three. Tournament host Treasure Valley won the opener 25-20, 22-25, 24-26, 25-23, 11-15. Lower Columbia then won a match that had three close sets 22-25, 24-26, 22-25. Shoreline also took a five set decision 25-18, 21-25, 18-25, 21-25, 9-15 in the final match of the tournament.
Coach Kathie Woods had this to say on the weekend, "The TVCC tournament result was not what I was expecting from my team. We had worked so hard at putting our past losses behind us. We played this last weekend very well at times. We were always in the matches but couldn't pull them out with a win. We seem to be lacking that competitive edge that is needed at this level. One thing is for sure... I will not give up on this team and we do have the talent to win. Right now it is a mental issue that is plagued by young teams. I am hoping for some drastic changes (in the win-loss column) here in this upcoming week. This week of league play is crucial to our standings for the NWAACC tournament. During the weekend I was very pleased with Rachael's (Strong) play. She was very competitive and played very hard until the final point. She showed great maturity and passion and I was very proud of her. Courtney also played well and continued serving good. She was honored as tourney all-star. Kylee injured her ankle/foot at the beginning of the second day and couldn't finish the tournament and Shauna was too sick to play all but the first match of the tournament. This week will be very interesting to find out just how much these Cougs want to win in this league."
Taylor Richardson led the team in kill with 87 on a 22% kill efficiency while Haylee Schaab had 58 and Natalie Baumgartner 42. Courtney Pattock dished 222 assists on a 33% assist efficiency and a team high 8 service aces. Rachael Strong led the way on defense with 68 digs while Richardson added another 57 and Ali King 55.
Pattock's solid play earned her All-Tournament Team honors.
The Cougars will next host Umpqua CC on Friday October 23rd at 7pm on Sponsor Night. The will also be honoring Richelle Heacock on Saturday October 23rd during their match against SW Oregon at 1pm.
Update on Richelle HeacockOctober 18, 2010 The following message is from former Clackamas volleyball player Richelle Heacock on her condition following her paralyzes from a car accident last January. Clackamas will be honoring Heacock next Saturday during their match against Southwestern Oregon.
(Clackamas head coach) Kathie Woods recently asked me to write an update on myself & how my recovery has been going for the last 9 1/2 months. While I'm not quite yet where I believe I one day will be, back on the volleyball court, I know I am on my way.
Since I've gotten out of the hospital, I have been having physical therapy three times a week for a minimum of three hours per session. During this time, my P.T & I will work on a variety of stretches, strengthening exercises & balance. My house has also become a mini rehab gym. I've got a machine that secures me to stand up past an hour's time. It's taken over a few months to work up to that, but it's really nice to be at eye-level. This also my bones & joints stay strong until I'm able to stand & walk on my own. In addition, i've been blessed to get an electrically stimulating bike. This bike electrically shocks my muscles into doing the motions of really riding a bike. This gives me all the benefits of really riding a bike & exercising my legs until I am able to work out for myself.
Since the first updates came out, they stated I was unable to move anything from the chest down. However, I am happy to report a lot has changed. I am now able to move my wrists, my triceps are starting to work, my fingers have moved a little & even my abs have kicked in a bit. The healing has continued throughout my body, even down into my legs. My therapists are able to balance my legs & eliminate a lot gravity. When in this position, I am able to move side to side & push down. It has yet to get strong, but it will. With time & prayer I'll get back to walking and, ultimately, playing ball.
My faith in Jesus Christ is definitely getting me through this ordeal. I am so very thankful to you all for your continued love, support & prayers. I don't know how I would get through this without you. Please continue praying & spreading the word. I know I will get up & step onto a volleyball court to play again, and I believe that to be very soon; but not without faith and prayer. Thank you again for your continued support!
Cougs breeze by Multnomah UniversityOctober 12, 2010
Oregon City, OR -- The Cougars enjoyed a three set win over the Multnomah University Lions, 25-15, 25-18, 25-22 to improve their overall record to 15-13.
Outside hitter Haylee Schaab had a terrific night with 14 kills on a blistering 47.8% kill efficiency while Taylor Richardson and Natalie Baumgartner chipped in a combined 13 more. Baumgartner also turned in a solid 35.7% kill efficiency and had a match high 3 aces. Setter Courtney Pattock dished 28 assists and had two aces. Richardson led the defense with 10 digs while Pattock and Kylee Bellamy combined on another 17 [box].
"Tonight's game was a stepping stone for us to get back on track aggressively," said head coach Kathie Woods. "I was very pleased with the way we hit the ball when we could. Haylee continues to step up and has become a solid "go to" hitter for us. She hits the ball aggressively and seldom makes mistakes as she placed the ball where it needs to go. Taylor has improved her serving and her passes are still consistent. Courtney had a great night finding her hitters and her serves continue to be a threat to our opponents. I am excited to see where the second half of the season takes us and am looking forward to our crossover tournament this weekend as this is our last long road trip."
Next on tap for the Cougars are six matches at the Treasure Valley Crossover on October 15-16 in Ontario, OR. Clackamas will face Whatcom, Centralia and Blue Mountain on Friday. Saturday's action will be against Treasure Valley, Lower Columbia and Shoreline [schedule].
Chemeketa edges Cougs in three setsOctober 01, 2010 Oregon City, OR -- The final scoreline read Chemeketa three sets to zero, but it could have easily been Clackamas 3-0. In a very close match, the eighth-ranked Cougs came out on the wrong side of a 27-29, 23-25, 24-26 result to the Storm [box].
The Storm's front line exposed the Coug's defense with multiple tips that costs the Cougs winning points that would have made a difference in each of the two point losses.
"We played flat tonight and did not bring the intensity and focus for a league match that I was hoping and preparing for," said head coach Kathie Woods. "Hopefully we will get it figured out soon and play the way we are capable of."
Taylor Richardson led the Cougar offense with 13 kills followed by Natalie Baumgartner and Haylee Schaab's 9 kills. Courtney Pattock dished 24 assists along with her two service acres. Four Cougs had multiple digs, led by Kylee Bellamy's 16 and Pattock's 13.
The Cougars now stand at 2-2 in Southern Region play. A half a game behind second place Chemeketa and a game behind Mt Hood [standings] .
Clackamas will next face second-ranked Mt Hood at 7pm in Gresham, OR on October 8th [schedule].
Rachael Strong and the Cougars receive league honorsSeptember 30, 2010
Oregon City, OR -- Several Cougar volleyball players have received league and team honors over the previous five weeks for stellar play led by defensive specialist Rachael Strong who earned the league's top defensive honor Wednesday.
Strong was named Southern Region Player of the Week on Tuesday followed the league's selection as NWAACC Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday.
"I am extremely proud of Rachael this year. With her being the only returning player off of the 2009 squad she has had a tremendous amount of responsibility and she is handling it very well. She is leading us on defense and she had a great week and is only looking to get better!"
For the week, Strong had 6 aces in 47 serves on a 98% efficiency, 53 digs for a 4.41digs per set average and a serve-receive efficiency of 2.39 in 12 sets.

"Haylee has really stepped up this week offensively," said Head Coach Kathie Woods. "On the week she had 40 kills out of 92 attempts with only 8 errors for a 35% kill efficiency. We really needed her especially against SW Oregon and she played really tough. I see Haylee slowly getting her confidence back (following her achilles injury last year) and remembering who she is as a player. I am very happy about that."
Schaab's great play at the net was highlighted during the match against SW Oregon when she tallied 17 kills on a 48% kill efficiency.

Cougs lose nail biter to Linn-BentonSeptember 29, 2010 Oregon City, OR -- In a match best described by Cougar head coach Kathie Woods as a 'barnburner', Clackamas and Linn-Benton were both looking for a league win to stay close region leader Mt Hood.
The Cougs kept the pressure on by winning two of the first three sets, but stumbled in the closing two in a 25-20, 18-25, 25-19, 21-25, 13-15 loss [stats].
Woods had this to say of the match, "We played real hard tonight but in the end we got beat by a more mature team. We have improved greatly and I am very proud of my girls for that. We will get there and we were very close. At this junction we need to focus more on what our role is and to do that consistently. We seem do it for a while and do it well and then lose focus. We passed extremely well tonight and we had some solid offensive with Haylee leading the way with 16 kills followed by Taylor with 15 kills. Linn-Benton is solid on defense and that is where the difference was tonight. We will be working hard on defense in preparation for Chemeketa on Friday. The Cougs have come a long way and I am looking forward to see just where this team will end up."
Haylee Schaab led the offense with 16 kills on a 27% efficiency and Taylor Richardson added another 15. Setter Courtney Pattock dished 37 assists. Four Cougs had double digit saves led by Richardson and Kylee Bellamy who each had 18 digs apiece. Ali King hit the nets hard with 7 blocks including 2 solos.
Eighth-ranked Clackamas now stands at 2-1 in Southern Region play a half game behind second-ranked Mt Hood who are currently 3-0 in the region [standings].
The Cougs will host Chemeketa (1-1) on Friday, October 1st at 7pm in Randall Hall [schedule].
Cougs open league play with a pair of road winsSeptember, 27, 2010 The Cougars got Southern Region play off in the right direction with a pair of road victories at Umpqua and Southwestern Oregon this past weekend.
In Friday's action, Clackamas lost the opening set 21-25 then reeled off three consecutive winning sets, 25-15, 25-20, 25-16 to dismiss the Riverhawks.
Taylor Richardson, Haylee Schaab and Natalie Baumgartner each had double digit kills as they combined for 42 kills. Courtney Pattock dished 44 assists and four Cougs tallied double digit digs led by Kylee Bellamy's 21 and Rachael Strong's 17 [game stats].
Southwestern Oregon and Clackamas battled back and forth in Saturday's match before the Cougars ended the draw with a win in the fifth set in a 18-25, 25-15, 17-25, 25-11, 15-10 duel.
Schaab put up huge numbers in the front line with 17 kills on a 48.3% kill efficiency and Richardson added another 13 kills. Pattock dished 50 assists while a quartet of Cougars had double digits saves led by Bellamy's 25 and Strong's 19. Strong also brought it on the serve with 4 aces while Pattock and Baumgartner combined for 5 more [game stats]. .
Coach Woods had much to say on the weekend, " I was very happy coming back from our first league road trip with a 2-0 record. It is always tough to head south for the Umpqua/SWOCC double header. I was very pleased with our progress at this time. We played exceptional defense on Friday night against Umpqua and we had a total effort on offense as well. Umpqua is playing much improved from the past several years. Against SWOCC we had to come from behind to secure the victory and that means we are maturing as the season progresses. Taylor, our usual go to hitter, was having a rough night offensively against SWOCC but Haylee has stepped up and is getting better, faster and higher every day. She has been working hard on the healing of her achilles injury last winter. Rachael was a fanatic on defense and also her serve and back row attack in the SWOOC match was killer. She is playing her new role (actually back to her old role from last year) very well. Kylee is adjusting well to her role as libero and is very disciplined in that position. Courtney is learning who her hitters are and is making better decisions every game. Her serve is also a weapon for us and we rely on that as well. We will be rotating our middles until we find who is more consistent and dominating. Every one of our middles has strengths so that is the value in that position. We have a tough week ahead of us and I am excited to see us grow more."
The Cougs (14-10) now stand at 2-0 in Southern Region play, a game behind Mt Hood who leads the Region at 3-0 [standings]
Clackamas will host Linn-Benton on Wednesday at 7pm followed by Chemeketa on Friday at 7pm [schedule].
Coach Woods wins #700 - Cougs win consolation championship
Oregon City, OR -- Head Coach Kathie Woods won her 700th NWAACC coaching victory Friday night as the Cougars downed Edmonds in three sets 25-15, 25-16, 27-25.
Woods has coached the Cougars for the last 28 years, along with a two year stint at the helm of Linn-Benton's program. The mark is believed to be the most volleyball wins by a head coach in NWAACC history which stretches back to 1978. Woods took her first head coaching job in 1981.

"Tonight's match was important because it is at the end of a long week and then to only look forward to the next day starting a tournament that we are hosting'" said coach Kathie Woods "This is a very big week. I am extremely proud of my girls for working so hard and testing their competitiveness and perseverance. This young team decided that after 5 losses in a row last weekend that they were going to do something about that real soon. After bouncing back with 3 straight victories we are now back on track and ready to prove that this team is for real."
Clackamas Crossover Clackamas opened the eight-team tournament Saturday with a win over Skagit Valley in three sets, 25-22, 25- 26, 25-7 and expected a good late afternoon match against Lower Columbia, a team they defeated in three earlier in the week. However, the Red Devils had revenge on their minds as they swept the Cougars, who were playing a bit flat, and got stunned in three grueling sets 24-26, 24-26, 19-25.
Clackamas next took on Treasure Valley in Sunday's 9am match and were eliminated from gaining entry to the championship bracket with a 23-25, 18-25, 21-25 loss to the Chukars.
The loss sent the Cougars into the consolation bracket where they repeated Friday's result against Edmonds with 25-20. 25-20. 25-16 three set win to earn a shot at Highline for the consolation championship match.
Highline gave the Cougs a run for their money in an exciting seesaw five set battle that saw the Cougars come back from an 8-4 deficit in set five to defeat the Thunderbirds 24-26, 25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 15-13.
Richardson paced the Cougars with 65 kills on a 23% efficiency while Natalie Baumgartner had 35 kills on a team high 27%. With setter Bellamy switching to the libero position for much of the tournament, Pattock became the solo setter and feed the offense with 137 assists on a 32% efficiency. Several Cougs tallied substantial dig numbers lead by Strong's 80, Richardson' s 70 and Bellamy's 69. Salopek led the blockers with 15 rejections followed by Baumgartner's 13 and Bethany Nyls' 10. Pattock also had 9 aces on a team high 99% serve efficiency.
Richardson and Pattock were recognized for their strong performances when they were selected to the All-Tournament team.
Coach Woods had much to say about the tournament, "Our own Clackamas Crossover is just what we needed to finish out a grueling schedule this week. We played 8 matches in 6 days after getting home from a tough tournament in Spokane the weekend before. This kind of preseason schedule helps to prepare us for the tough play in the Southern Region. With only this week to finish getting ready I feel like we have grown quite a bit and this last weekend we chose to break through with our goals. I am extremely proud of how hard these girls have been working. This team is a great bunch of girls who are pushing each other and respecting each other as they work the hardest they have worked in their lives. The last match of the tournament (and week!) was against Highline. Highline is a team that is always tough and both teams always seem to bring it out when we play each other. It is a cross division rivalry that has been very healthy for the Cougs over the years. We squeaked out a great comeback in a tiebreaker game to seal the victory. I believe we were down by around 9 points in a 15 point tie-break game to come back and win. It takes great character and perseverance to get that job done and that is the main reason I love this team. They now realize what it takes to play hard and strong. I felt that was our greatest accomplishment to date. With this momentum (going 6-2 in those 8 matches) I feel it is gaining our confidence for league this next weekend as we travel to UCC and SWOCC."
The Cougars (11-10) will face Multnomah University on September 22nd (7pm) in Portland before beginning league play against Umpqua on September 24th in Roseburg, OR [schedule].

We had some solid plays as we are continuing to strategize in the game. Kylee was great in serving and setting, controlling the tempo. Rachael had some great passes and Taylor was again our go to hitter. I was very pleased with the way Bethany stepped in in the middle position and brought the speed we needed in that role. We are right in the middle of a tough week and I am proud of the way the Cougs are fighting!"

Woods added, "We have a lot of competitive play this week facing some of the NWAACC's toughest teams. It will be a good test for this team to decide who they want to be this year as a team. I am looking forward to working hard in this challenge. We have a great group of girls!"

She had a kill efficiency against Clark of 32% and also the same efficiency for the Highline Tourney. She had 40 kills for the week and was 100% serving with 6 aces. Baumgartner's tournament performance led to her selection to the Gold Division All-Tournament Team.
Coach Kathie Woods had this to say on the weekend, "I was very pleased with the way this young Cougar squad is playing. We are learning a lot every point we play. We are having some inconsistencies but I am certain we are learning from them and this team will not let up. We are bettering ourselves every time we step on the floor. We had some great moments in the tourney and I was especially pleased with the toughness of Kylee, Natalie and Taylor. The leadership of Rachael was awesome too as she played hard the entire tournament. We have a very tough week ahead of us and we will use it to continue to press hard and learn how we are as a team."

"I was pleased with how we came to play tonight. said head coach Kathie Woods. "I was curious to see what kind of character this team would demonstrate and I believe we have what it takes to get better with every match. I was especially pleased with Kylee's and Natalie's serves as well as Kylee's decision making in her set choices. Natalie played a great overall game and displayed her experience of the game. Taylor came to play and is our leader on offense. She is a solid player that we will see getting more aggressive as the season goes on. I was also impressed with the defensive play of Rachael. She is playing a new position and she is progressing very well. I was very pleased with the entire team. Everyone played, with the exception of Courtney, who is still out with a knee injury. We see what we need to work on. We have a long way to go but this team will get better with each match."
The Cougars will travel North to play Highline CC and Pierce College on September 2nd then play a tournament at Highline on September 3-4 before returning to play Tacoma CC at home on September 7th.
Young talented squad will bring it in 2010August 11, 2010 Oregon City, OR -- Every year when I go to write the new volleyball season’s outlook it never ceases to amaze me with how different each of my teams are. I am entering my 30th year of Jr. College coaching this year (28th at Clackamas) and I feel just as excited as my first year of coaching. I feel like a little kid in a candy store! I approached this year with a clean slate. I have recruited nine new Cougars to the squad and we are going to have an entirely new look. I love it! I am filled with excitement and anticipation of a fun filled year. This new team has a ton of character! As I get to know them I have so much respect for them. They are committed and working hard already, to prove that they believe in the Cougar philosophy of giving 100% in school, volleyball and life. They are fun! They work hard…they laugh…they encourage each other…they respect each other. Yes, this team has what it takes to come together. The bonus is…they can play volleyball too!!
Now with all of this excitement comes a little hesitation…I will have to be honest. We are young. We come from many different high schools and club programs. It will take us a little while to come together on the court. I plan on being patient. (I may need to be reminded! J) But I do know that these girls will work hard and are planning on being successful. I never approach any season thinking anything less than reaching for the title. At the Jr. College level every season is new for every team. That is what makes it exciting. The ages are pretty consistent and it will boil down to the team that does come together and finds all of its strengths and develops them to the fullest. We plan on doing that.
The Cougar strengths this year lie in our depth. We have so many options that we can do on offense. We have a pair of great setters who are working hard with each other and they complement each other well. Kylee has great hands and Courtney moves to the ball very smoothly. They both have a wealth of experience setting and both will be leaders for us. I feel very confident in the setting category.
We have good hitters in Taylor, who can place the ball where she wants and hits hard. We also have Natalie who really “likes to hit the ball”. Kristin puts up an amazing block and leaps out of the gym. Shauna is getting better and better every day and is a pillar of strength for this team. Haylee is another good leaper and comes with a ton of experience. She will be a little slower to the lineup as she is mending from Achilles surgery…but she will work her way in and there is no doubt that we will utilize her skills. Bethany has a great arm swing and is working hard to fill in when needed in the front row. Ali King is another rock. She came in great shape and can play the front row or the back row when needed. She is very mature and is an excellent example of what we desire from our athletes, both on and off the court.
Our defense will be very fun to watch. We always pride ourselves on Cougar defense and this year will be no exception. With Rachael (our lone returnee) leading the way on defense I am confident that not many balls are going to hit the floor. The girls will be diving and digging, and tearing up the court on defense. The team is fun to watch. They are loud and full of energy. Rachael will bring back her killer serve that will make our opponents want to run for cover when they are on our home court!
There are more surprises in store. You will just have to keep coming and see us progress. Our goal is to be better and better every single match. We will be scratching and clawing…all the way back to the top…where we belong. Jump on and enjoy the ride with us!! You will have a “roaring” good time. Get to know these girls and what they stand for. You will be impressed! I know I am! I know I will enjoy the honor of working with these girls and I am looking forward to the fun memories we are going to share this year. Thanks for your support and we will see you at the games!! Don’t forget to stand and clap for your Cougs! (An occasional ROAR won’t hurt either!)
Coach Kathie
PS. A side note: This year you will not see #5 in the lineup. We are holding out that number in honor of Richelle Heacock (No.5), last year’s Cougar setter, who was seriously injured in a car wreck on Jan. 4, 2010. Richelle is presently paralyzed from the chest down. Richelle is determined to walk and play again and is working hard every day with that purpose. Our thoughts and prayers are with Richelle and her family. She is a true Cougar. We love her and are so very proud of her!
