Baseball NewsCCC continues climb in South standingsApril 25, 2011
OREGON CITY, OR -- The Cougars continued their rise from the region cellar last week with a split at SW Oregon Thursday and a sweep of Chemeketa Saturday.
Trysten Stencil blanked the Lakers for seven innings while the CCC built six run lead and went on to win 8-5. SW Oregon made a late run in the eighth inning but Nick Olney came in relief to put out the fire and cool off the Laker comeback. Olney went 4-4 with four singles and an RBI while Derek Atkinson went 2-4 with a homer and two RBIs to highlight the CCC offense.
Game two was a pitching duel as both clubs had a combined five total hits. The usually potent CCC offense couldn't find an answer for the Lakers' Kyle Davis as Davis went the distance in a one-hit, 3 strikeout performance for the 1-0 Laker win.
The Cougar bats got back on track against Linn-Benton Saturday scoring 24 runs in a pair of CCC wins. Clackamas exploded for eight runs in the first three innings to take a 8-2 lead. CCC manufactured five runs in the second inning from four singles and an RBI triple by Sergio Cruz and another three in the third on doubles by Ty Harper and Julian Burgess. The Roadrunners scored three in the fifth to come within four run at 9-5, then added two more in the seventh but ran out of steam as CCC took a 9-7 win.
LBCC scored in three straight innings in game two to take a 5-3 lead after three innings, but that is when the wheels completely fell of the bus for Roadrunner starter Sam Paterson. The Cougar bats exploded In the fourth - Cruz and Burgess collected consecutive walks off Paterson, then extra base hits by Ryan Abel (2B), Zach Miller (3B) and Austin Keifer tallied four runs to give CCC a 7-5 lead. Olney and Harper also RBI singled in the inning to give the Cougs a 10-5 lead. The Cougars piled on four more runs in the fifth and capped the scoring with a run in the sixth en route a 15-5 win.
CCC (8-8) now holds sole possession of third place in the South, a game behind Lane (9-7) and a game ahead of Linn-Benton (7-9). Mt Hood sits atop of the South standings with a 12-4 region record.
the Cougs will host Lane on Tuesday, April 26th in a double header at CCC. Game one is slated for a 1pm start.

Cougars climb back into South playoff pictureApril 19, 2011
OREGON CITY, OR -- Clackamas won a pair of games against Chemeketa Tuesday to up CCC's region record to 5-7 and increase their chances to make the NWAACC championship tourney (top two clubs advance).
The Chemeketa bats had a tough time finding an answer to Cougar ace Marshall Crawford as he tossed a nine inning, six hit, complete game in the opener to lead CCC to a 9-1 win. It was a 1-1 game going into the sixth inning when CCC tallied three runs and added five more in the eighth to break away from the Storm. Derek Atkinson, Ty Harper and Austin Keifer each had a pair of hits while RBIs were collected by Ryan Abel (2), Julian Burgess (2) and Keifer.
David Rasmussen held off the Storm in four innings on the mound giving up a run while Clackamas scored five to give Rasmussen all the run support he needed in a 5-4 CCC win in game two. Chemeketa gave the Cougar faithful a scare in the seventh with three runs to narrow the gap, but Roman Lorentz came in to close it, earning the save for the Cougs.
Clackamas now sits in a tie for fourth place with SW Oregon in the South standings. Mt Hood leads the race for the #1 seed with a 9-3 record followed by Lane and Linn-Benton, each with 7-5 records in the region.

Saints take pair from CougarsApril 12, 2011 OREGON CITY, OR -- The Cougar pitching staff had trouble containing the Mt Hood hitting lineup as they game up 26 runs on 36 hits over two games to lose the twin bill at home Tuesday. CCC got a big inning going in the eighth inning of game one when they used mostly small ball to manufacture four runs on just five hits, but needed much more to overcome the big gap the Saints had mounted in a 13-5 Mt Hood win.
Sophomore first baseman Nick Olney produced CCC's only run production in the second inning off a two run blast that scored sophomore outfielder Sergio Cruz from second base in a 13-2 loss in seven innings.
The Cougars (3-7, 9-13) are now tied with Chemeketa for last place in the South Region. The wins keep the Saints (8-2, 12-5) on top of the region followed by Lane who is 6-4. Linn-Benton and SW Oregon are tied with 5-5 records in third place [standings].
CCC will next hit the road for a DH with Southwestern Oregon CC in Coos Bay on Saturday, April 16. The two clubs split the region opener on March 29th. Opening pitch is slated for a 1pm start.

Cougs split with Linn-Benton and LaneApril 11, 2011 OREGON CITY, OR -- The Cougars split with Linn-Benton last Tuesday taking the opener 7-1 behind a strong pitching performance by Marshall Crawford and thirteen Cougar hits led by Ryan Abel and Julian Burgess who had three hits apiece and combined on four RBIs. Crawford recorded a five-hit, four-strikeout complete game showing while Abel and Burgess went 3-4 at the plate in CCC's 7-1 win.
The Cougars got plenty of hits (9) in the second game game but couldn't put together enough to put a dent in Linn-Benton's 6-0 second inning lead and dropped the contest 10-2. Starter Jordan Cameron (0-2) took the loss in two innings of play.
After two scoreless inning in Saturday's game one against Lane in Oregon City, the Cougars put together a five run third inning. Zack Miller tallied the first run on a fielding error, then Tyler Arnold doubled to score Julian Burgess and Nick Olney to make it 3-0 CCC. Ryan Abel capped the third inning scoring with a single that sent Sergio Cruz and Arnold across home plate.
Lane didn't lay down and came back to even it 6-6 in the top of the ninth. But CCC finished off the Titans in the bottom of the inning with three more runs to take the win and give ninth inning closer Roman Lorentz his second win of the season. Abel and Austin Keifer had solid performances at the plate, each collecting three hits apiece. Keifer accounted for two RBIs while Burgess, who had a pair of hits on the day, tallied another three RBIs.
Clackamas took control early in game two when Burgess scored off a sacrifice ground by Olney followed by a Cruz single to score Atkinson to give CCC a 2-0 lead after one. The Titans picked up runs in the third (3) fourth and fifth innings to lead 5-2 going into CCC's last at bat in the seventh. The Cougars got seven batters involved, including the heart of the order, but could only manage to score Burgess off a Brett Fredrickson fielder's choice in a 5-3 CCC loss. Starter Trysten Stencil (1-3) went 5 innings with three strikeouts and allowing six hits.
CCC (3-5, 9-11) now sits in a three way tie for fourth place in the Southern Region standings. Mt Hood (6-2, 10-5) is in first followed by Lane (5-3, 10-10) in second and Linn-Benton (4-4, 10-10) in third.
The Cougars next take on seventh-ranked Mt Hood CC at Clackamas on April 12th. Opening pitch is slated for a 1pm start.

CCC and SOCC then traded scores in the fourth. SW Oregon increased its lead in the top of the 7th to 7-5, but CCC manufactured five runs on just five hits over the next two innings to steal a 10-7 come from behind win.
Clackamas found itself down 9-0 in the top of the sixth in game two following two big innings that saw the Lakers score three in the first and six in the sixth. The Cougar bats finally awoke late in the game with a run in the sixth and five in the seventh, but couldn't over come the damage in a 9-6 loss.
CCC again got into early trouble against Chemeketa in a Saturday double header in Salem on April 2nd. The Storm built a 6-0 lead after two innings, including a pair of runs on two Cougar errors.
CCC got on the board in the fifth on runs by Abel and Austin Keifer to make it 6-2 then tallied a few more in the top of the seventh to close the gap to 6-4.
Chemeketa answered with two more runs of its own in the bottom of the inning then piled on four more in the eighth to put the Cougars in a six eight run deficit, 12-4.
Clackamas got the rally caps out for the top of the ninth, ripping off a string of six runs lead by Derek Atkinson's three run rocket, but fell short in a 12-10 loss.
Atkinson got the Cougs off to a good start in the flip side of the DH with a solo bomb in the first inning, but then the CCC bats went quiet as Chemeketa collected a run in four of the first five innings to rake 4-1 lead. Atkinson tripled in the sixth then scored on a RBI ground-out by Ty Harper, but that was all the gas the Cougs had left in the tank in a 5-2 loss.
With four games on record for each South team, a potent Clackamas (1-3, 7-9) hitting squad currently sits in the cellar of the region and hopes to find some better performances on the mound to stay in the playoff ace.
The Cougs are in Albany today to take on the Linn-Benton Roadrunners (2-2, 8-8) game one is slated for a 1pm start.
