Portland, Ore. - Clackamas opened the day with North #2 seed Shoreline Friday morning and played catch-up most of the game against the Dolphins.
Shoreline opened the first inning with a 1-0 lead and held it until Missy Eberhart drove in Megan Peterson in the top of the fourth to tie it, but Shoreline quickly countered with two more run in the bottom of the inning to lead 3-2.
Emily Morrill brought it big in the top of the fifth with a two-run blast, scoring Kayla Vedaa to make it 3-3, but the Dolphins again lit the boards for two more in the bottom of the inning to reestablish a a 5-3 lead.
After tapping in another run in the top of the sixth (Eberhart scoring Peterson) to narrow the margin to 5-4, Clackamas brought in Renae Stockwell from the bull pen in relief of Peterson in the top bottom of the sixth.
Stockwell held off the Dolphins long enough to allow Mallory Callahan to even the score in the top of the seventh with a solo shot to make it 5-5.
In the botom of the inning, the Dolphins got a runner on, then advanced her to third on consecutive steals and punched-in the winning run on a sacrifice fly to give Shoreline the the 6-5 win.
The loss sent the Cougars into the one-loss bracket and a meeting with West #4 seed South Puget Sound.
Clackamas didn't waste any time dissecting the Clipper's starting pitcher as they scored nine runs in the first and three more in the second in a 17-0 disaster that eliminated South Puget Sound from the tournament.
Ashleigh Cuddie tossed a 2-hit, 5k shutout over five 'mercy-rule' shortened innings in the victory.
Morrill smacked a three-run homer and Eberhart added a 2-run shot of her own. Winningham went 2 for 3 with a double while Morrill went 3 for 4 (HR) and Eberhart was 2 for 3 (HR).
The Cougars will open Saturday's play with East Region Co-Champion Spokane at 10:00am. Follow the all scores on the NWAACC Championship site at http://www.nwaacc.org/softball/Championships/Championship.php

Oregon City, OR - It should have been easier with six home games - but the Cougars hit a streak of difficult losses until the last game of the regular season - one they desperately needed.
Clackamas entered the weekend with a shot of taking the South Region title, but after double header losses against Chemeketa and Lower Columbia the team found itself needing a win in today's twin bill with Clark to ensure a spot in the post season tournament.
Thursday, a quality Chemeketa squad, with an outside chance at the playoffs, stunned the Cats with 6-1 & 7-3 losses.
Top-ranked Lower Columbia didn't make matters any better Friday afternoon when they took another two off the Cougs.
Game one was close with Lower Columbia leading 5-4 after six innings, but the Red Devils unleashed with six in the top of the seventh to take it 11-4.
Clackamas had the Devils on the ropes in the second game with a 4-0 lead going into the fourth, but the Lower Columbia bats came alive and scattered nine runs over the next three innings to build a 9-5 lead. Clackamas battled back in the bottom of the seventh, but only managed two additional runs in a tough 7-9 loss. Sophomore Susan Winningham her 9th & 10th homers of the season and freshman Megan Peterson got her 3rd of the season.
Heading into Saturday's action, the Cougars needed a win over Clark to earn a berth into the NWAACC Championship tournament.
Clark surprised the Cougars in the first game as the Penguins established a 4-3 lead in the first inning and held the lead the rest of the way in a 8-6 Clark win.
With the season on the line entering game two, Clackamas manufactured three runs in the first then added another two in the fourth and fifth to build a 5-0 lead. Clark answered with three runs in the sixth, but the Cougars lit up the scoreboard for another four runs in the bottom of the sixth as the Cats cruised to a 9-4 win.
Clackamas, the South's third seed, will open the playoff tournament against the North Region's second seed, the Shoreline Dolphins on May 15 at 9am at Delta Park East in Portland, OR. Clackamas and Shoreline previously met on April 4th, with the Dolphins winning 6-3.
They play in the the Southern Region, a region known for elite NW softball teams. Eighteen of the last twenty NWAACC championships have been won by a South team (Clackamas eight times with five runner-ups)
Today's Cougars should remember the 2006 team, who entered the tournament with a similar mediocre 23-19 record, but took 2nd place of 20 league teams. Many Cougars 'stepped-up' thier game for that finish.
Complete coverage of the playoffs will be available on the NWAACC web site [Championships link]

Gresham, Ore - Eighth-ranked Clackamas laid a stunning two game upset over the second-ranked Mt Hood Saints on the Saints' home field Friday.

The Saints countered in the third with three runs to make it 3-2 Mt Hood.
After two scoreless innings, Clackamas exploded with three runs in the sixth when Megan Peterson drove in freshman Chelsea Mitchell and Neel doubled to score sophomore Susan Winningham and Peterson.
Winningham put an exclamation point on the win in the seventh when she doubled to drive home sophomore Mallory Callahan for a 6-3 Clackamas win.
Former Oregon 5A Pitcher of the Year, Ashleigh Cuddie, recouping from injuries that sidelined her last season, collected her sixth win of the season.
The Saints built a 3-0 lead with runs in the first and third innings in game two off of freshman ace Renae Stockwell, but the Cougars bats caught fire in the sixth.
Peterson doubled to drive in Mitchell and Winningham for a pair of runs then Jordan Short pinch hit for Cuddie and launched a three-run homer to score Peterson and Neel as the Cougars took a 5-3 win.

Oregon City, OR - Clackamas entered the weekend competition with a 3-5 record and tied with SW Oregon for third in the South, but emerged with sole possession of third and a much improved 7-5 record. [standings]
The Cougars belted the Clark Penguins 12-1 and 11-5 in Friday's twin bill action at Vancouver, then followed with a pair of wins over Southwestern Oregon Saturday at Clackamas.
Freshman Ashleigh Cuddie picked up her 4th win of the season with a six hit, one run performance against Clark in the opener. Megan Neal got the Coug offense off to a great start in the first inning when she tripled to score freshmen Emily Morrill and Samie Genskay to build an early 2-0 lead.
The Cougars manufacture three more runs in the third highlighted by freshman Megan Peterson's RBI double.
The Clackamas bats then singled their way to five more runs in the fourth to take a commanding 10-0 lead.
Sophomore all-star Susan Winningham top off the scoring when she belted a two run homer in the fifth as the Cougars won 12-1 in a eight-run rule shortened five inning game.
Clark got off to a postive start in the second game when they picked up three runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead, but the Cougars answered in the third when Winningham ripped a three-run shot to tie it at three all. The homer was Winningham's seventh of the season, just four shy of her school record of 11 last season.
The Penguins countered with two more runs across the third and fourth innings, but the Cougars again exploded for five runs in the fifth, in an inning marked by a triple from sophomore Mallory Callahan and doubles by Morrill and Genskay.
The Cougars went on to win the contest 11-5 as freshman pitcher Renae Stockwell earned her eighth win on the season. Callahan yielded the hot bat for the Cougars in game two as she went 3-4 with a double and two triples.
Clackamas returned home on Saturday to host the eight-ranked Southwestern Oregon Lakers (28-10).
The Lakers jumped on Clackamas with three runs spread over the opening two innings in game one, but - with two outs and the bags empty - the Cougars retaliated in the bottom of the second with five runs spurred by Callahan's two RBI double and a double steal by Genskay and a steal by Winningham. Cuddie went the distance on the mound for Clackamas, collecting her fifth win of the season.
Renae Stockwell hit the rubber for game two and tossed a seven inning shut out in a 2-0 Clackamas win. Genskay got the Cougars on the board in the second with a RBI triple to score Morrill from first while freshman Megan Peterson put the icing on the cake with a RBI double in the third to score Genskay from second.
The Cougars will take on the second-ranked Mt Hood Saints for a double header on Friday, May 1st. Game one is slated for a 3pm start. [schedule]

The Cougars built a 4-1 lead after four innings of play, but the Saints picked up three in the fifth to knot it at four all.
Clackamas sealed the win in the sixth when Ashleigh Cuddie led off the innings with a single then took third off a Saint miscue. Mallory Callahan drove in Cuddie to give the Cougs all they needed in a 5-4 win.
Pitcher Renae Stockwell picked up the win with Sam Genskay, Megan Peterson and Cuddie all collecting a pair of hits on offense.
Game two didn't go quite as well for the Cougars. The Saints opened with a 1-0 lead in the first and exploded for 10 runs in the third in a 12-2 loss for Clackamas.
In Saturday's play, the pitcher Ashleigh Cuddie got great offensive support in a 5-2 Cougar win over the Chemeketa Storm. The Cougars collected 10 hits led by Emily Morrill, Susan Winningham and Megan Peterson's plate performances. Each lady singled with Morrill homering and Winningham and Peterson providing doubles in the game.

Oregon City, OR - The Cougars took three of four games in Mt Vernon, WA this past weekend at the North Inter-league tournament.
On Saturday they lost a 6-3 contest to Shoreline then bounced back in the second game with a 3-2 win over Peninsula. Ashley Cuddie took the loss on the mound in game one while Megan Peterson tossed a five-hitter and homered to edge the Pirates, winning her second game of the season.
On Sunday, Clackamas downed Skagit Valley 3-1 and Everett 9-6 to even up their overall record at 7-7. Cuddie picked up both wins for the Cougars and Susan Winningham nearly hit for the cycle against Everett with a single, double and home run.
The Cougars didn't fair as well at Lower Columbia Tuesday losing their league openers 1-2 and 1-4 against the top-ranked Red Devils.
Clackamas and Ashley Cuddie kept it close in game one with the score knotted at one apiece through six, but the Devils scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a one run win 2-1.
The Cougars scored first in game two with a run in the first, but Devil sophomore Tasia Trochim was able to hold the Cougars to just one hit in a 4-1 Lower Columbia win.

The sixth-ranked Cougars will host second-ranked Mt Hood Saints for a twin bill on Friday, April 10th at 3pm.

Casa Grande, AZ - Clackamas traveled to southern Arizona this weekend to participate in the Central Arizona College Invitational. The young Cougars knew this was going to be a challenging tournament since all of the squads already had 30-60 games under their belt and have been playing since late January.
The Cougars opened the tournament with a 4-3 loss to Odessa CC. Odessa scattered the scoreboard with four runs over six innings. The Cougars made a serious challenge for the lead in the bottom of the sixth when they scored three, but couldn't find more as freshman Renae Stockwell took the loss on a six hit performance.
Stockwell and the Cougars rebounded in their second game on Friday as they defeated Mesa CC (15-18) 5-4. Stockwell allowed eight hits over seven innings to pick up her third win of the season. Megan Peterson went 4-4 at the plate with a double and four singles while Susan Winningham and Missy Eberhardt had three hits apiece including a triple by Winningham.
Clackamas closed the day against powerhouse Eastern Arizona College (38-13). The Cougars led the Gila Monsters 3-1 until the sixth when Eastern exploded for six runs to win 7-3. Winningham tagged her second home run of the season to lead the Cougar batters.
Bracket play began Saturday with Clackamas drawing Eastern Arizona for the second consecutive game. This time the Gila Monsters controlled the game from start to finish in a 6-0 shutout. Freshman Samantha Genskay was the lone hot bat at the plate for Clackamas going 2-3 with a pair of singles.
The fourth-ranked Cougars now stand at 4-6 on the season. They will travel to Centralia, WA to participate in the West Inter-Region Tournament on March 28th. On Saturday, Clackamas will face Olympic at 4pm and Bellevue at 6pm then take on Skagit Valley at 1pm and Everett at 3pm on Sunday.

Oregon City, OR - The Cougars loss a pair of games today in one of many tough non-league match-ups as they took on the Concordia University, the nation's 15th-ranked NAIA squad. The Cavaliers blanked the Clackamas in game one 8-0 off a two-hit performance from junior Danielle Pulfrey, a Cascade Conference all-star.
The Cougars faired better in game two as the two teams battled in a scoreless affair until a five run fifth inning that favored Concordia 4-1. Neither team could manage another score as the Cavaliers' Bethany Dempster picked up the win.
The loss puts the NWAACC's fourth-ranked Cougars at 3-3 on the season. Clackamas will travel to Casa Grande, AZ to participate in a ten team tournament. They will play three games on Friday, March 20th and then move into bracket play on Saturday. [view schedule]

The Cougars finished the last season fifth (of 20 league teams) at the 2008 NWAACC Championship Tournament. The Cougars enjoyed another bumper crop of great incoming talent and expections in the 2009 are high.
Third-year head coach Jessica Buel will be looking upon 4 returners and 12 newcomers to bring the Cougars back to the NWAACC Championship game.
"This year's team has a lot of expectations and we are looking to improve upon last year's success," says Buel, "but a lot will be put on the shoulders of our newcomers."
Infielders
CCC will be looking upon freshman Samantha Genskay (Oregon City, OR) and Megan Neel (Vancouver, WA) to anchor the middle infield. Neel is known for her steady glove and strong bat will start as the shortstop.
Genskay has great range and a quick release at second, but it's her bat and quickness that will surprise a lot of people this season.
Freshman Megan Peterson (Eugene, OR) and Jordan Short (Molalla, OR) will be asked to take on the responsibility as the Cougar's infield utility players. Fresham Carly Duran (Monmouth, OR) will share time with Peterson at third base. Duran has a solid glove, strong arm, a potentially very productive bat.
Freshman Missy Eberhardt (Milwaukie, OR) will start at first base. Eberhardt brings great leadership to the infield and a strong bat to the lineup.
Catchers
Three freshman will fight for time behind the plate, Becca Lokeno (Central Point, OR), Brittany Eifert (Glide, OR), and Duran. Lokeno whose work ethic is second to none, will give the Cougar's more depth behind the plate. Eifert has been a pleasant surprise in the lineup; Brittany adds a good bat and speed. All three will see time at other postions in 2009.
Outfielders
Sophomores Kristel Baeckel (Gresham, OR), Mallory Callahan (Vancouver, WA), Kayla Vedaa (Canby, OR) and Susan Winningham (Central Point, OR) will be joined this season by Emily Morrill (Medford, OR) and Chelsea Mitchell (Oregon City, OR).
Baeckel and Winningham were both All-Region selections for the Cougar's last year. Winningham tied the school homerun record with 11 and hit .419 leading the team in batting average. Susan will also see time behind the plate. Callahan and Vedaa both bring speed to the lineup.
Morrill, Oregon 5A Player of the year in 2008, will bring a solid glove, strong arm, and a powerful bat to the Cougar's offense. While Mitchell will add speed and versatility, her ability to slap will get her many opportunities to contribute.
Pitchers
Freshman Renae Stockwell (Canby, OR) and Ashleigh Cuddie (Central Point, OR) are expected to be the top starters in 2009.
Cuddie, 2007 Oregon 5A Pitcher of the Year, will also see time at third base. She brings versatility and consistency to this young Cougar squad.
Freshman Megan Peterson, 5A First Team All-State selection, will round out the pitching staff and see most of her time out of the bullpen.
The Cougars will open their schedule against Centralia Community College in Centralia, WA and follow that with several pre-season games against four-year colleges. The Cougars will then travel to Arizona to play in a tournament during spring break before opening NWAACC inter-region play.
[view schedule]
"This is a competitve schedule for us," says Buel, "not only are we facing four-year colleges, but we have also scheduled some of the top junior colleges in the nation."
