R. Bail
R. Bail is an artist moonlighting as a computer science student—or is it the other way around? Besides drawing and fiddling with computers, she belly dances, devours books and stirs up trouble in her spare time.

Dana E. Birch
Dana Birch is a housewife and mother who is returning to college after dedicating the last 20 years to her home and family. She plans to pursue a degree in Drug and Alchohol Counseling after she finishes at Clackamas Community College.

Sarah Block
Sarah is in her last year at CCC. She has explored many majors and has currently settled on Psychology. She is a scholarship athlete and is on the Track and Cross-Country team.

Alex Conrad
Alex is currently attending the Adult High School Diploma Program at Clackamas. His interest in poetry comes from listening to and loving rap music. After receiving his diploma, Alex plans to study audio production at the Art Institute of Seattle.

Dianna Currier
Dianna Currier is in her second year at Clackamas, and will soon be applying to the Nursing Program for Fall 2001. After graduation, she plans to continue her education at OHSU, obtain her Master's degree, and practice as a Nurse Practitioner in Pediatrics.

Herb Dierking
A South California high school honor student and varsity athlete in wrestling and track, Herb Dierking notes he has relocated to the green hills of Oregon to further his education, make friends, and influence people.

Lesley Ferguson
A member of the Accelerated Degree Program’s seventh cohort, Lesley Ferguson reports, 'I was born and raised in South Africa and settled in Portland eight years ago. Currently, I am enrolled in the ACD program, hoping to discover what I want to be when I grow up.'

Melvin Fiegi
Mel Fiegi, an Accelerated Degree Program student, has twenty-five years’ experience in management and manufacturing. His analytical report discusses the feasibility of converting waste to energy through a unique combination of technology from three distinct industries: waste treatment, foundries, and materials handling.

Kim Frederickson
Kim Frederickson is in her last year at Clackamas Community College. She plans to major in English with an emphasis in writing and mythology and a minor in cultural anthropology. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa.

Allison T. Gerfin
Halfway to a B.B.A., Allison T. Gerfin quit school and spent the next 15 years "chewing through a smorgasbord of jobs," such as stockbroker, bicycle messenger, drag queen boutique salesperson, and welder. She is now returning to school to get a long-deferred degree, saying, "I hope to get a B.A. before another 15 years pass."

Sharon Grant
Sharon is pursuing dual associate degrees in Computer Applications and Networking at Clackamas Community College. While she graduated with a degree several years ago, Sharon found that she was not suited for the career she had chosen. She chose to place her priorities in supporting her husband's career and raising children. Last fall, Sharon decided to return to college to pursue a computer technology degree when her son enrolled in college out-of-state. She is excited to learn as much as possible before returning to the workplace equipped with her new skills. Sharon says that if she had only known that she would have such a great experience learning, she would have started sooner.

Zeitel Gray
Zeitel Gray plans to finish one more year at CCC, then transfer to Oregon State University, where she will major in Environmental Engineering, with a minor in Environmental Science. She has chosen this major because she wants to help improve the status of our environment.

Harris Gwinn
Harris is a 53-year-old father of six and grandfather of five. Since dropping out of Portland State University in 1967, he has been a surfer, Indian art dealer, cowboy, commercial outfitter, horse shoer (15 years), golf course mechanic, real estate agent, and student. He started school again to learn about his computer and to improve his writing.

Gretchen Hall
Gretchen Hall writes, 'I am a wife and mother of two boys. This is my second year at CCC, and I still can’t decide what I want to do! I am a later-in-life student, and the students and staff of CCC have been very supportive.'

Dean Harvey
Dean is in his first year at Clackamas Community College. He is pursuing a career in environmental technology. He is returning to school after serving in the military for several years.

Tyler Hayes
Tyler describes himself as a quiet and introspective person, and claims this accounts for his recent interest in writing. At Clackamas he has studied fiction with Tim Schell and screenwriting with Sue Mach.

Teryl Hoffmann-Figgins
Teryl Hoffmann-Figgins is a Psychology Major, with a career goal of counseling children with mobility impairments. Her past experience includes working as a scout leader for kids who use wheelchairs, as well as being part of a team of Clackamas Community College students/staff/community members who are working on a joint project to design an ultralight youth wheelchair. Teryl has a background as a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant as well as having worked in a school setting for multiple-handicapped deaf autistic children. She graduated from Clackamas in the spring of 2000, and has transferred to Portland State University to complete her final year of undergraduate studies, followed by graduate school in Counseling and Disability Studies.

Timothy A. Howell
Timothy is a native of south Florida. He came to the Portland area after meeting his wife on the Internet. His hobbies include collecting Disney memorabilia, musical theater, DVDs, the Internet, and watching Survivor on television. He enjoys studying art, history, and writing. Even with such a busy life, he still makes enough time to work full time and hold a 4.0 GPA as a full-time student. He is majoring in psychology and plans to be a psychologist.

Rachel Hunt
Rachel has completed her first year of Music Theory at CCC. She plans to take Theory II next year. She enjoys singing with her family and playing and singing for church. Her main musical goals are to write choral music for church groups and to teach piano and voice.

Matt Iverson
Matt Iverson is a full time student at Clackamas Community College, majoring in Literature and Creative Writing. He enjoys books and movies, loves to play water polo, and is allergic to fluorescent lighting. This is his first non-fiction publication.

Mariah Kreinheder
Mariah Kreinheder is currently a student at CCC, majoring in History and Politics. In the fall she will transfer to Willamette University where she plans to earn her degree in Pre-Law and eventually attend law school. At CCC, she is an officer for the Associated Student Government and President of Phi Theta Kappa. She was recently named one of the Oregon Scholars.

Briana Lenartz
Briana Lenartz is in her first year of college at Clackamas, and is living in Oregon City with her parents. She plans on transferring to a four-year college in the fall. She likes the modern art exhibits on campus, particularly the "Spartan Angel" and the piece entitled "The Burden of His Own Ambitions."

Suzanne Lytle
A member of the Accelerated Degree Program’s sixth cohort, Suzanne Lytle works at the Port of Portland. Her writing has been published in their widely distributed newsletter.

Arlene McAuley
Arlene McAuley is a retired RN, and is attending CCC with the desire to complete her BS degree in nursing. She received her ADN at CCC and worked at Portland Providence Medical Center for the bulk of her career. After obtaining her BS degree she may continue her education to the doctorate level since she is single with lots of time. She enjoys writing and poetry.

Beth McKinnon
Beth McKinnon received her Associates degree in 1982 from Portland Community College. After running a computer consulting business for 10 years, she decided to go back to school to become an art therapist. She is extremely interested in the evolution of human consciousness, as well as in becoming a "real" artist.

Judi Mattingly
Judi Mattingly is a non-traditional student (43 years old). This is her first semester at Clackamas. She is pursuing a career in which she can work with the elderly while her kids are still living at home. After they are grown, she plans to further her education and reach for a degree (or degrees) in History and English.

Genoa Molden
Genoa Molden participated in the Accelerated Clackamas Degree (ACD) program from Sept. 2001 through June 2002. She earned her AAOT degree in Business Administration from CCC and is currently attending George Fox University's degree completion program, majoring in Management of Business Information Systems (MBIS). Genoa continues to take CCC courses each term, primarily through Distance Learning, and considers herself a life-long student. Writing has been one of Genoa's passions since beginning her college career, and she is honored to contribute to
the Banyan.

Mary Moss
Mary Moss is a housewife and mother returning to college after a 20 year absence. She plans to transfer to Portland State University after she finishes at CCC. She hopes to graduate with a degree in music with an emphasis on choral music, music history, and music composition.

Glorianne Muggli
Glorianne is in her last quarter at CCC. She is an Art major and will be transferring to Pacific Northwest College of Art. She is the Associated Student Government Vice President and a member of LDSSA, Phi Theta Kappa, and the Student Art League. She lives in Estacada with her husband, three daughters, and an "adopted" international student. Three people in her household are CCC students. Her hobbies include reading, horseback riding, singing, and needlework. She and her husband own a small publishing business, for which she edits, writes, and illustrates books.

Teresa Nelson
Teresa Nelson (now Teresa Welch) was a member of the Accelerated Degree Program’s fifth cohort. Presently, she is vice president of Hot Off the Press, Inc., a thriving regionally based company.

Barbara Nolan
Barbara Nolan received her B.A. in General Studies, Social Sciences from Portland State University in 1977, and her J.D. from Lewis & Clark in 1980. Her major academic interests at CCC are: French, Computer Science, and Dance (country line and swing).

Angeline Nomie
This is Angeline's first year as a student at Clackamas. She is planning on obtaining her transfer degree and majoring in business at PSU. From there she hopes to start her own business or pursue a career within a corporation.

Brianne O'Neill
Brianne currently attends Clackamas Community College full-time, works part-time, and is preparing to move to Romania for the upcoming summer. She plans to teach special education and take the skills she learns from that profession to work with the mentally and physically challenged children at Suta Dragodana and live in Romania year round.

Sue Pesznecker
Sue Pesznecker is a clinical research nurse who works with a group of scientists studying the human balance system. After raising three children, Sue has returned to school to earn an English degree and pursue her passion for writing. In her spare time (i.e., the six minutes per day not occupied by homework), Sue is a geology and Columbia plateau rock art buff and loves camping, hiking, gardening, and swimming. She's also an avid reader and has been published in the medical-scientific literature. Oh, and she owns what may be the world's only black bear-treeing miniature poodle (hi, Ernie!).

Brad Pitney
Brad Pitney, in his first year at Clackamas, created his newspaper of literary events during his second term of World Literature Survey. He is accomplished in several genres, including essay, drama, and journalism. Typically, his writing displays his analytical mind and incisive wit. "Return of Noah's Flood?" refers to Geoffrey Chaucer's farcical "Miller's Tale" in The Canterbury Tales. "Knight Runs Rampant," "Hypocritical Priest," and "Dante's Travel Planner" explain themselves. In Brad's Classified section, Brother Alberto is a religious faker and rake in one of Boccaccio's tales from The Decameron, while Prince Genji hails from the eleventh century Japanese classic The Tale of Genji by female writer Murasaki Shikibu. Finally, Brad's "Food Today" section is based on "A Modest Proposal," by Jonathan Swift, in which the great satirist suggests solving Ireland's famine problems by having the rich eat the children of the poor.

Derrick Potter
Derrick balances an active life of work, school, and social committments. He may term himself a "slacker," but he maintains active contacts in other parts of his life as well.

Sara Sanky
Sara is a freshman in college majoring in elementary education. She plans to minor in the Spainsh language and possibly teach in a Spanish-speaking country someday.

Andrea Scroggs
This summer Andrea Scroggs will be presenting a co-authored paper at an international conference in Malaysia. The paper is based on the impact modern technology has on a linguistic minority.

Nita Smart
Author of the creative nonfiction piece 'Sushi,' Nita B. Smart writes, 'I am from Oregon City and the single parent of one daughter. We both attend CCC. She is ahead and will move on after this year. Online and onsite, we both really enjoy the time we spend at CCC.'

Travis Spencer
Travis Spencer is an applied linguistics major. He plans to eventually transfer to Portland State University. After obtaining a BA degree and an MA, he plans to become an English teacher in Europe and abroad. When he isn't typing papers and studying, Travis enjoys spending time with his wife, Sara, making WebPages and playing on his computer.

Jillian Strickland
Jillian Strickland is a Sociology major. She plans to attend Portland State University in Fall 2000, and hopes to eventually receive her Masters degreee from Reed College. Her goal is to teach Sociology at the college level. Between raising her daughter, Christi Rose, and working a part-time job, Jillian finds college challenging yet exciting.

Michael Terzzan
Michael Terzzan wrote his Banyan contribution for his Beat literature class. He notes he is 'a returning student, 32, working on my degree in political science.'

Alicia True
Alicia is a second year student at Clackamas. After leaving here, she plans to continue her education at Portland State University in either English or Theatre Arts.

Stevanie Waldorf is an English major at CCC . She enjoys creative writing.

Lt. Col. Sherman Washburn
He says it may sound "corny," but years ago Lt. Col. Sherman Washburn heard the expression "There's so much to learn, and so little time in which to learn it." This quest has lasted for more than 82 years and still remains one of life's greatest fascinations.

Sarah Winder
Sarah Winder is a second-year student in the Honors College at Clackamas Community College. While her career goals are uncertain, she expects to major in political science after transferring to a university.

Tara Wood
Tara Wood writes, 'I appreciate this opportunity. I enjoy writing and exploring all the different things to write about. I love philosophy and I’m considering majoring in it. I’m in the Chamber Choir at Clackamas and singing is an important part of my life. I have also become very interested in politics and plan to continue educating myself in this area.'

April Younglove
April is finishing her second year at CCC and will continue studies in English and Art at Marylhurst University in the fall. She has a cartoon column--"Roger"--in The Clackamas Print and was editor of her high school literary magazine.
