Week 1/Apr. 3

Welcome to Class!

It's a pleasure to have you along for our winter tour of Microsoft FrontPage 2003. Bookmark this page: we'll meet here each week to get our assignments and guidelines for the current lesson (the Lessons page is updated every Monday). If you want to see an overview of the course, take a look at the Schedule. If you have questions or need assistance you can contact me by e-mail, phone, or face-to-face (click on Instructor).

First, some housekeeping. If you haven't done it already, do this now:

  • read the Orientation thoroughly, and be sure to let me know if you have any questions about any aspect of this course.

  • read the e-mail guidelines thoroughly, and be sure to let me know if you have any questions or problems; you'll need to follow them exactly!

  • Go to the Conference Room and log in to Blackboard. We'll be using this to communicate with each other throughout the term. We also use Blackboard to take weekly online quizzes. If you're new to Blackboard or need to set up a new Blackboard account, go to Getting Started in Blackboard.

  • download the student data files for New Perspectives on Microsoft® FrontPage® 2003, Introductory. You'll need them to do your assignments.

  • Go to Sign up for Web Hosting and follow the instructions there to set up an account with Angelfire (don't worry; it's free). You'll need this to publish your web pages to the World Wide Web. If you already have a web hosting service, you can skip this and continue to publish to your own server. Once you have set up your web hosting account, please e-mail me the address (URL) so I can bookmark your web site.

This week we'll begin our regular weekly routine, which is as follows:

  • Read the assigned Tutorial in the text, working through each step to complete each Session in the Tutorial. This week we'll tackle Tutorial 1, Sessions 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3. You will create the first page of your Sunshine Garden web site, which you will continue to expand and improve for the rest of the term (nothing to publish this week).

  • At the end of each Tutorial is a short list of exercises called Review Assignments. In order to prepare your Web site for the next Tutorial, you need to complete all revisions called for in the Review Assignments.

  • Upon completion of the Tutorial, go to the class Conference, log in to Blackboard, and take a short quiz corresponding to that lesson. The first quiz will be available starting next Monday. Quizzes are available for one week only (no make-ups!)

  • Check into the Discussion Board (also in Blackboard) to participate in class discussions or ask questions. There are currently two forums: Class Discussion (where we conduct weekly discussions on topics of current interest; there's one posted now for you to reply to) and Q&A (use this forum to post questions about the course, technical problems, or FrontPage assignments).

Looks like you've got your work cut out for you this week. Good luck, have fun, and be sure to let me know if any questions, problems, or confusion.
