Getting Started

  1. Read this Orientation completely and learn what you need to do to successfully complete this course (I suggest you print it out for easy reference). You can jump to key topics by clicking on the bookmarks at the left.

  2. Send me an e-mail at bills@clackamas.edu. Please format the subject line of your message exactly as follows: BT181/your last name/introduction. In your e-mail message, introduce yourself and give me the e-mail address you wish to use.  Important: Do this now! Until I get your message, I do not know you are in class.

  3. Go to Lessons and find out what we're doing this week in class. Current reading, writing, and discussion assignments and deadlines are posted there.

  4. Go to the Conference Room and log on to Blackboard. We'll be using this application for class discussion, questions and answers, and weekly quizzes. If you are not familiar with Blackboard or need to set up a new account, go to Getting Started in Blackboard and follow the instructions there.

  5. For more information about online courses at Clackamas Community College, go to our Distance Learning page. If you are new to online learning and would like some help getting started, check out BT101 Intro to Online Learning, a one-credit course designed to get you up and running quickly and successfully.

Registration: To participate in this class, you need to register with Clackamas Community College. You can register in person, by mail, by phone, or online. For more information, go to CCC Enrollment Services.

Textbook: If you haven't already done so, purchase this book right now:

  • Jessica Evans, New Perspectives on Microsoft® FrontPage® 2003, Introductory, Course Technology/Thomson Learning, 2004

Textbooks are available at the CCC Bookstore located in McLoughlin Hall (check their website for current hours or to purchase online).

Technical Requirements: I expect anyone viewing this has access to a computer, modem, browser, and internet service provider. In addition, to complete your assignments for this course you will need:

  • Microsoft FrontPage 2003 (may be purchased alone or comes with the Microsoft Office Professional 2003 suite).

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x. Other browsers (i.e., Netscape Navigator or earlier versions of Internet Explorer) may not display all FrontPage web features properly. You can download Internet Explorer for free here.

  • An e-mail program capable of sending and receiving attached files. If you are not familiar with this feature of your e-mail program, you might try looking in the program's help menu or calling your ISP's technical support (if you have it).

  • If you don't have access to the required hardware and software, you have the option of working on class assignments in the Business Department Computer Lab, located in McLoughlin Hall 130.

Course Prerequisites: Basic keyboarding and computer skills (BT 120 & CS 120, or equivalent) or instructor’s consent

Course Description: Introduction to the web page editing program Microsoft FrontPage 2003. Learn to create a web page and manage a web site using FrontPage's comprehensive set of editing, design, and administrative tools. This course covers web page design and editing, web site organization and management, and fundamental concepts of the World Wide Web. Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to

  • create a professional-looking web site using FrontPage's templates and wizards

  • customize your web pages using FrontPage's editing and formatting tools

  • enhance the functionality of your web pages using FrontPage web components

  • organize and manage a web site using FrontPage's administrative tools

  • understand the fundamental concepts necessary to successful web site design.

Credit: 3 college transfer credits

Grading: Evaluation will be based on proficiency with Microsoft FrontPage 2003 as demonstrated in your homework assignments, weekly quizzes, class participation, final exam, and Personal Web project. Assignments are weighted as follows:

Tutorial Exercises (Sunny Web Site)

150 pts.  

Weekly Quizzes

150 pts.  
Class Participation (Discussion Board) 25 pts.  

Final Exam

75 pts.  
Personal Web Project 100 pts.  
Total 500 pts

90% or higher:

80-89%:

Class Policies

  • All written assignments must be neatly typed and free of spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors.

  • Class participation is required. All students are expected to be active participants and contributors in class discussions and group projects. If it’s necessary for you to miss any of the class activities, please make sure I know in advance.

  • All work must be turned in on time. Late assignments will be penalized 20%. Late class discussion exercises and quizzes will not be accepted.

  • To officially drop the course or withdraw from college, you must file an Add/Drop Request with the Registrar’s Office. Ceasing to attend class does not constitute official withdrawal. Students wishing to drop the class without responsibility for grade must officially withdraw by the end of the sixth week.

  • Academic honesty is a requirement for passing this course. The penalty for plagiarizing an assignment or cheating on an exam is an F in the course.
