Weekly Lesson Plan

Recommended weekly lesson plan for PageMaker 7:
The lessons in Adobe PageMaker 7.0 Classroom in a Book typically require about 2 to 3 hours to complete. I strongly encourage you to set up a weekly routine to do your assignments, following the guidelines below:

  • Make sure all needed fonts and files are loaded on your system. See instructions from Week 1 if you need help finding or loading fonts.

  • Open and review the final version of the lesson publication. You may want to keep this open on your desktop for reference as you work (do not turn it in!)

  • Open a new document, or open the specified beginning document file, and follow the steps in the lesson to complete your assignment.

  • Read the text carefully and follow each and every step in the lesson.

  • Save frequently!

  • If you have access to a printer, print out your completed publication to see how it compares to the example in the book (note: some lessons will instruct you to substitute another printer PPD; ignore this if you will be printing to your own printer).

  • Save your completed lesson file(s) in the format indicated (PageMaker 7 or PDF).

How to turn in your assignments:
The final step in each lesson is usually to print your document, and, if you have access to a printer, I recommend that you do so. To turn your assignment in, however, you will need to attach the completed file to an e-mail message and send to Bill (be sure to follow the e-mail guidelines!). You may submit your files in either PageMaker 7 or PDF format.

What is PDF, anyway?

PDF stands for Portable Document Format. It's a handy, universal file format for exchanging documents or posting them to the web. Recipients can view or print the document exactly the way you formatted it, even if they don't have PageMaker or the fonts on their system. PDF documents are created in Acrobat Distiller and viewed in Acrobat Reader, a free utility available from Adobe .

If you have difficulty creating PDF files:

You need to install Acrobat Distiller on your system (it's on your PageMaker application disk). With Distiller installed, you can follow the instructions on pp. 41-42 in Classroom in a Book to create a PDF file of your PageMaker document.

Questions:
If you have any questions or problems, please post them to the Q&A forum in the conference room, or contact Bill. If you don't mind coming to campus, you can also get help in the McLoughlin computer lab Monday-Friday from 8 am- 5 pm and Monday-Thursday evenings from 6-8:30 pm.
