Week 2/Apr. 10

Lesson 1: Flyer
OK, let's get started on our first PageMaker project. Lesson 1 (starts on page 8) is a simple one-page, two-column, black and white flyer. This lesson introduces several key features in PageMaker, including

  • creating a new PageMaker publication

  • setting up rulers, guides and zero point

  • setting up multiple columns

  • placing, formatting, and positioning text and graphics

  • drawing circles, rectangles, and lines

  • range kerning text

To successfully complete this lesson:
You will need about 1½ to 2 hours to complete this lesson. I strongly encourage you to set up a weekly routine to do your assignments, following the guidelines below:

  • make sure all needed fonts and files are loaded on your system

  • open and review the finished version of the lesson publication

  • read the text and carefully follow each and every step in the lesson

  • save frequently!

  • if you have access to a printer, print out your completed publication to see how it compares to the example in the book (note: some Lessons will instruct you to substitute another printer PPD; ignore this if you will be printing to your own printer)

  • save your completed lesson file(s) in the format indicated (PageMaker 7 or PDF)

How to turn in your assignment:
The final step in this lesson is to create a PDF (Portable Document Format) file of your completed flyer (PDF is a handy format for exchanging documents or posting them to the web; recipients can see the flyer the way you formatted it even if they don't have PageMaker or the fonts on their systems). Follow the instructions on pp. 41-42 to create a PDF file, then attach that file to an e-mail message to Bill (be sure to follow the e-mail guidelines!).

If you have difficulty creating the PDF file (did you install the Acrobat Distiller with your PageMaker application?), you may attach your PageMaker 7 file with a note in your message explaining the problem.

This assignment is due in my e-mailbox by noon Monday, Apr. 17.

Questions:
If you have any questions or problems, please post them to the Q&A forum in the conference room, or contact Bill. If you don't mind coming to campus, you can also get help in the McLoughlin computer lab Monday-Friday from 8 am- 5 pm and Monday-Thursday evenings from 6-8:30 pm.
