Lesson 7: Recreational
Catalog
This week we plunge
into the deep, dark mysteries of color printing. As you will see, there's a
lot more than meets the eye to the job of preparing a high quality color
publication for a commercial printing press. In particular, we'll explore
the use of process color separations to create a full rainbow of colors from
just four inks. Then we'll have to deal with the issue of registration and
trapping, which arises when printing overlapping colors. In addition, Lesson
7 introduces several new PageMaker features:
-
Kodak Photo CD. One of
the first, and still one of the best, ways to store high quality photos on
digital media. PageMaker lets you edit and place photos directly from a
Photo CD.
-
Inline Graphics,
which are like any other placed graphics except that they are inserted
into a text block using the text cursor, and consequently stay "inline"
with the text.
-
Paragraph Rules.
A nifty way to create filled boxes behind your headlines, they streamline
formatting and stay with the type when it moves (and can be saved as a
style!).
-
Links Manager.
As you may have noticed, every time you place a graphic in a PageMaker
file, you have a choice of embedding the new file or just linking to it.
Linking is better (it keeps down the file size), but when you go to print,
you better be able to find those links!
-
Preparing files for a
prepress service provider. Most PageMaker jobs consist of several,
perhaps dozens of, files; i.e., fonts, graphics, colors, etc.. The printer
needs them all to successfully print your job. Fortunately, there's a
plug-in to pull them all together.
What you need to know about
Lesson 7:
In order to
successfully complete this assignment, you need to make sure you have the
following features installed on your system (they should already be there if
you performed typical install of PageMaker 7 and Classroom in a Disk files):
-
Kodak
CMS, or Color Management System (on the PageMaker 7.0 installation disk)
-
Kodak
Photo CD Import Filter (on the PageMaker 7.0 installation disk)
-
Adobe
Acrobat Distiller (on the PageMaker 7.0 installation disk)
-
Agfa
9800 PPD, or Postscript Printer Description (on the Classroom in a Disk CD
ROM)

PDF Separations file, click here.
Please let me know if you
have any trouble finding or using any of these tools. The final exercise of
this lesson is to create a PDF file of color separations. Please send this
file to me by noon Monday, May 29.
Final Project: Student's
Choice
Lesson 7 is our last
project in Adobe PageMaker 7.0 Classroom in a Book. Your next, and
final, project is free play; you get to design and produce a PageMaker
publication of your own choosing. This can be a newsletter, a booklet, a
brochure, a business report, or any other project that interests you.

This week in the
Conference Room:
Don't
forget to check into the Discussion Board this week to ask questions or
discuss issues that come up as you work through your PageMaker lessons.
Don't be shy; let's talk!
