Program for Intensive English

Mission Statement

The English as a Second Language Department serves resident ESL students through essential course work and related support services that enable students to achieve personal, educational, family and work-related goals.

The Program for Intensive English serves international students, tourists, and other international visitors. International students need to apply to the college in order to obtain a F1 International Student Visa. Students in the Program for Intensive English pay out-of-state tuition. The English as Second Language Program at Clackamas Community College serves immigrants and international students. By serving these two types of students, speakers of many different languages attend classes together.

Classes offered:

Core classes are offered in conversation, reading, writing, and grammar. Electives classes include Pronunciation, Intercultural Communication, TOEFL/TOEIC Preparation, American Idioms, Vocabulary Building. The program also has a multimedia computer lab and one-on-one tutoring help through our Literacy Program.

Sites:

Day classes are offered at the Oregon City campus. Night classes are offered at the Harmony campus and at community sites in Canby and Molalla.

Cost:

A small fee per course is charged for immigrants. International students pay out-of-state tuition and fees. International student tuition averages $2620 for 11 weeks, depending on courses.

Class size:

Class sizes vary, but the average is 20 students.

Average enrollment per term:

The day program averages about 160 students per term. The night program averages 600 students per term.

Program Offerings

• Classes are offered for beginning to advanced levels.
• The student community is diverse; international students and immigrants attend classes together.
• Homestay opportunities are available.
• Classes are small so that students are able to receive individual attention.
• The cost is low, compared to four-year colleges and universities.
• The college provides assistance to students in obtaining student visas.
• Short-term programs can be designed for international visitors; no student visa is necessary.
• Advanced level students who are residents can take some college classes and are entitled to apply for free health insurance through Kaiser Permanente.
• Students who complete the program can be admitted to Clackamas Community College without a TOEFL score.
• All four-year public Oregon universities accept community college degrees.

• The American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP) has certified the program.
• The program participates in Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), National Association of International Educators (NAFSA), and Study Oregon activities.
• Clackamas Community College is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges.
