After the lecture and the reading assignment for week one students should:

 

1)  Be able to explain the concept of  uniformitarianism and how it is applied in geology

 

2)  Know who James Hutton is.

 

3)  Be able to explain how uniformitarianism is used to understand the formation of features on earth

 

4)  Know what is meant by deep time and know what the scientific age the earth is.

 

5)  Understand what the geologic time table is and how/why it was created.

7)  Understand and be able to explain/use the following concepts

            Stratigraphic superposition                      Faunal Succession

            Original Horizontality                             Unconformities

            Cross cutting relationships

 

8)   Know the difference between relative and absolute dating

 

9)  Know the basic structure of the earth and what the physical and chemical properties are of each region

 

10)  Be able to explain the difference between continental and oceanic crust

 

11)  What evidence was used to support the idea of plate tectonics?

 

12)  What is Pangaea and when did it begin to break up?

 

13)  Be able to explain the concept of Plate tectonics

 

14)  Know what the following plate boundaries are and be able to explain the interactions and results from the following types of plate boundaries

            divergent                    convergent (3 types)                  transform

 

15)  Give modern day examples of each type of plate boundary

 

16)  What are the mechanisms that drive plate tectonics.
