Objectives Week 1
Earth systems and the Scientific Method
After having done the assigned reading and attending lecture for week one, you should be able to answer or respond to the following.
1) Know the difference between the English and Metric systems of measurements.
2) Know the following conversions units:
1 meter = 3.28 ft; 1 inch = 2.54 cm; 1 mile = 5280 ft; 1000 meters = 1 km; 100 cm = 1 m
3) What are the four fundamental properties and why are they called this (this is from the reading)!
4) What is density and how can it be used?
5) What is meant by the term “Earth System” and be able to explain the concept of a system.
6) What are the 4 spheres of the earth system?
7) What is the hydrologic cycle?
8) What is the rock cycle?
9) Know the basic difference between Kinetic and Potential energy
10) Explain, in general, the Law of Conservation of Energy and be able to give an example of it.
11) Explain what is meant by an open and closed system
12) List at least two energy sources that drive the earth system.
13) Be able to explain clearly but concisely the scientific method and the basic assumption use for the scientific method of observation.
14) Know the difference between a hypothesis, a theory and a law.
15) What is the difference between basic science and applied science?
