| To create a Graph Using Excel: |
| You
have 2 columns of data. The first
column will be the X coordinate and the second Column will |
| be the Y
coordinate. Highlight these two
columns and then use your mouse and click on the |
| word Insert
on the pull down menu. Click on the
Chart Option. When this window opens,
scroll |
down to the scatter (x,y) graph
option and highlight it. Click the
next button |
at
the bottom of the page. This next page
we won't need for this exercise so |
| 4 |
5 |
click on the next button again at
the bottom of the page. This next page |
| 6 |
10 |
that
shows up is where you can label your graph and axis. Do this then |
| 7 |
13 |
click on the next button. This final page just asks where you want
your |
| 5 |
6 |
chart located. I would suggest placing it on a separate
sheet from this |
| 5 |
6.5 |
page. Click on the option "object in"
sheet #2. This will place your graph |
| 5.5 |
8 |
on sheet 2 of your spreadsheet (see
at the bottom of the screen to click |

between
sheets. Click on the finsh button to place your graph into |

your spreadsheet. |

Once
you have created your graph you can change anything about it. |
| 6 |
9 |
You can remove data, change what the
data points look like, add a trend line |
| 5.5 |
7 |
change
the background, change the axis fonts/scale etc. Many of these |
| 4.8 |
6 |
changes
can be made by clicking once on the graph then using the pull |
down menu at the top under chart |

| Once
you have created your graph you can change anything about it. |
| You can
remove data, change what the data points look like (circles vs diamond), add
a trend line |
| change
the background, change the axis fonts/scale etc. Many of these |
| changes
can be made by clicking once on the graph then using the pull |
| down menu
at the top under chart. You can resize
your graph by pulling on the |
| edge of it
(after it has been selected). Play
with your graph a bit and try making it look different. |
| Change the
font size on the Y axis by double clicking on the axis itself. Then look at the options |
| and see how you
can change the way the graph looks. |
| Another
option is to remove the Legend so the graph can be larger. Do this by clicking on the legend |
| and
hitting delete or by going to the chart options and click on the "don't
show" option. You only |
| do this if
you only have one group of data. |
| After you
have played around a bit, try to put a trendline on the data. You do this by making the graph active |
| and then
using the chart option on the pull down menu.
Select "add trendline" and the linear option |
| Hit
the ok button. Now the best fit line
should appear on your data. You can change the color, weight |
| or
style of the line by double clicking on it and then selecting what you
want. |
| Finally,
Print off the first chart you created
and and the last chart. To do this you
can click on the graph |
| to
make it active then hit print. This
will create a graph that is a full page in size. To save paper, copy and |
| paste your
graphs to a new sheet (sheet 3) and then click on that sheet somewhere other
than a graph. |
| Now when
you hit the print option, you will print the whole sheet and not just the
graph. |
| If you
have problems working through this exercise, please come talk with me. Don't wait till the day (or hour) |
| before the
assignment is due to say something.
The Idea here is to help you learn some of the tools used |
| in science
and to help you understand something about graphing data. Oh…and the inturpetation part? |
| If I were
to inturpret the data above… |
