Lecture: The Changing Earth; Exploring Geology and
Evolution, 5th ed., Monroe & Wicander
Lab:
General Geology Lab Manual;
Course Web Page: http://depts.clackamas.edu/science/physci/geology/index.htm
Course Content and Philosophy: This introductory course examines surface processes on
earth and materials associated with those processes. Topics discussed include rivers, ground
water, glacial processes, beach processes and deserts. The course has a lecture and laboratory
component and students are required to attend both portions of the course.
Student Outcomes: This course is designed so when a student
successfully completes the course they should be able to discuss the geological
principles that relate to, rivers, groundwater, mass wasting, shorelines,
deserts and glaciers. Additionally, the
student should have an understanding about topographic maps, geologic maps and
satellite imagery techniques. Student objective (study) sheets and lecture
notes will be available on line for each topic discussed.
Grading G102: Grading is based on quizzes, a midterm, a final exam,
class assignments and lab work
•
One fieldtrip may be offered during the term. The fieldtrip is optional for G102 but will
correspond with a homework assignment that can be accomplished on the
trip. Space for trips will be limited to
a maximum of 14 students but not fewer than 10 students. If the trip does not happen due to low
student turnout, the web based assignment must still be done.
Grading percents for G102 will be
based on the following:
Quizzes 20%; Class assignments and attendance 15%; Midterm 20%; Final Exam
20%; Laboratory work 25%
Grading G202: Grading is based on quizzes, a midterm, a final
exam, class assignments, reading and reports and lab work
•
One fieldtrip may be offered during the term. The fieldtrip is optionally but strongly
suggested for G202 students and will correspond with a homework assignment that
can be accomplished on the trip. Space
for trips will be limited to a maximum of 14 students but not fewer than 10
students. If the trip does not happen
due to low student turnout, the web based assignment must still be done.
Grading percents for G202 will be
based on the following:
Quizzes
are 18% of your grade; Class assignments/attendance are 10% or your grade;
Essay/ readings are 11% of your grade; Midterm is 18% of your grade; Final Exam is 18% of your grade; Laboratory
work is 25% of your grade.
Letter grades for G102/202 will be assigned based on
the following percents:
100-90% (A);
89.9-80% (B); 79.9-70% (C); 69.9-60% (D); <60% (F)
(the
instructor reserves the right to lower the % distribution if necessary to
accommodate a reasonable grade distribution)
IMPORTANT…PLEASE
READ!!!
Students may exercise the
right to drop this class until the end of the 6th week of the term
without being held responsible for a grade.
If a student stops attending class prior to or during the sixth week,
they will be given a Withdraw for the course unless they communicate to the
instructor in writing that they wish for a letter grade. From the beginning of the 7th
week, if a student stops attending class, they will be given a letter grade
unless they ask (in writing) for a Withdraw.
Students may ask for a Withdraw from the course (in writing) until the
end of the 8th week. If a
student has not asked for a withdraw by the end of the
8th week, they will receive a letter grade for the course. An incomplete will only be issued when all key components of the course have been
completed with the exception of one item.
A student accumulated grade to that point must be of a C or better to
qualify for an incomplete. To receive an
incomplete you MUST speak with the instructor and submit your
request in writing. If you have chosen a
pass/no pass grading option for this course, you must earn a C or better to
receive the passing grade. If you decide
to change your grade to a pass/no pass you must do this before the 10th
week of the class. The instructor
reserves the right to make exceptions to the terms above on a case by case
basis.
Laboratory
Ø
You MUST pass
the lab with an average score >60% to pass Geology 102/202.
Ø YOU CANNOT MISS MORE THAN TWO LABS AND
1) You MUST attend lab during the first week or
your place can be given to another student attempting to add the lab.
2) Lab exercises are to be done in PENCIL
and will be turned in each week at the end of your lab period. Lab
assignments will
be returned to you in lecture. It is
your responsibility to learn the material and
be prepared for
quizzes and tests. Since you will be
quizzed on the lab material, it is your responsibility to check the
lab keys each
week to make sure that you are understanding the material.
3) Your lab grade will be calculated from:
·
8 lab assignments
(there will be nine total but one can be dropped). If you miss a lab and that lab is dropped,
you will still be responsible to learn the material from the lab you
missed. Additionally, if you attend
and complete all 9 lab assignments you will receive extra credit towards
your lab grade.
·
4 quizzes which
are noted in the syllabus as to when they will be and what they will
cover. There are no make-ups for lab
quizzes but you will drop your lowest quiz score.
·
A cumulative lab
final exam during the 10th week of the term.
Your lab grade represents 25%
of your course grade and will be determined base on the following percentages:
Labs 50% Quizzes 30% Final 20%
Student Honor Policy: Plagiarism and cheating will NOT be tolerated. While
students are encouraged to interact in small groups during class assignments
and lab, any cheating or copying will result in a zero for that assignment and
may result in consequences at the administrative level.
If you have a documented
disability and wish to discuss academic accommodations, please contact me as soon as possible.
Please turn off all cell
phones and electronics on entering the classroom. Cell phones and electronic devices are
not allowed in lecture or lab!!
If I see them you will be asked to turn it off or leave the room. NO EXCEPTIONS!!
