Assignment #3 Scientific Papers

Due May 31st or June 1st

For this last assignment you will need to choose your own scientific paper and write an analysis of it.  The paper MUST be from a recognized scientific journal and have the format of a scientific paper.  If it doesn’t have all the parts of a scientific paper (abstract, introduction, methods, etc…) then you shouldn’t choose it.  You can find your paper where you choose, though unless you travel to the libraries at PSU, UO, or OSU you will probably be better downing loading a paper using the directions I provide at the end of this explanation.

Here are your guidelines:

            1)  The paper you choose must have some sort of a geological connection

            2)  Pick a subject you find interesting.  Some fields/subject areas you may want to    consider include (but are not limited to);

Seismology, volcanology, engineering geology, environmental geology, tectonics, sedimentology, mineralogy, paleontology, geophysics, GIS,                           deformation ect

            3)  Find a paper you can understand (for the most part) and write a synopsis of it. Be sure to list the hypothesis the author(s) is trying to support,

what they found and what research they did . The     paper should be 2-3 pages in length, typed, double spaced with a 12 point Times New Roman              font. 1 inch margins on all sides.  Use the following format for the start/top of your paper.

                        First line:  Your Name

Second Line:  Title of the paper

                        Third line: Author(s) Name(s)

Fourth line:  Journal Name, Edition, Year and Page numbers of article

            4)  Turn in your paper with a copy of the Scientific paper you chose.  If you can’t, for some reason, print off a copy, you need to come see me

             BEFORE the assignment is due.

Finding a Scientific Paper:

There are many different Scientific Journals but unfortunately you must have a subscription often times in order to view the papers they publish.  If you go to a library at any of the universities there are many journals in the stacks that you can look through.  If you don’t have that option, you have a valuable resource in your library here on campus.   There are many journals you can access on-line if you know what to do.  Follow the directions below to search through the libraries resources to find an article you like.  NOTE:  in order to access the libraries on-line journal resources you need to be on campus.

Start at the Library’s web page (I have linked it on the class site).   (http://library.clackamas.edu/)

Click on ‘find Journal or Magazine”

Click on EBSCO Host button and then Click on Academic Search Premier (follow steps below)

Another option is to use the Academic Online search.

In the First field, type in the subject you are looking for (see guideline #2 above).  Then in the pull down menu next to this field select “Key Words” or “Subject”

In the second line down, type one of the Journal Names listed at the end of the page.  Then in the pull down menu next to the second line, select “Journal Name”.

Hit enter

You should now get a list of articles from the Journal you selected that have some relation to the subject you want.  Select only articles that show the option of full text after the listing.  Then click on that option to download the article.  Many of these Journals won’t let you view articles that have been published in the past year so if there is one you are just dying to read that you can’t get, check with the library about them obtaining a copy of the article for you.

Journals:

Journal of Geology

Geobiology

Journal of Geotechnical & Geoenvironmental Engineering

Modern Geology

Rocks and Minerals

South African Journal of Geology

Earthquakes and Volcanoes

Journal of Earthquake Engineering

Canadian Journal of Earthsciences
