Objectives Week 2

Mineral Chemistry

1)  Know the three particles that make up atoms, what their charges are and where they are located in the atomic structure.

2)  What is the octet rule and know that it is used to understand how electrons fill the orbitals of atoms.

3)  Understand the difference between an atom and an ion.

4)  Be able to diagram an atom if you are told how many protons it has and how many electrons it has.

5)  Know the difference between a cation and an anion.

6)  Be able to determine if an atom will become a cation or an anion.

7)  Understand how atoms can be neutral but not have a stable electron configuration.

8)  What is ionic bonding and how does it work?

9)  What is covalent bonding and how does it work?

10)  What type of bonding controls cleavage and which controls fracture?

11)  Understand how minerals grow (adding on to the outside edges of existing minerals) and how space and cooling rate will effect the size and shape of the minerals that form.
