Faculty Referrals of Tutors

It is necessary for the faculty to determine the qualifications of tutors; therefore, we rely strongly upon the recommendations of faculty to identify potential tutors. Tutors must fill out a Tutor Application Card and be referred by an Instructor

What to bring to Tutorial Services

After securing a signed tutor application card bring it to Tutorial Services and do the following:

  • Complete the Employment Notice and Service Record.

  • Complete the I-9 form. This will require you to bring two pieces of identification such as a Drivers License, Social Security Card, Passport or Birth Certificate.

  • Read and sign the Tutor's Job Description.

  • Read and sign the Tutor's Guidelines

  • Interview with the Coordinator to make sure your file is complete.

Tutor's Role & Job Description

Tutors can work one-on-one, in small groups, in a lab, or in a classroom with students.  Tutors review concepts or explain processes to improve the student's academic achievement and assist the student in becoming capable of independent academic success.

Tutoring is a support service for students and is not intended to take the place of instruction.  Tutors help students understand, express, and apply course concepts.  Tutors advise students, when appropriate, concerning methods and habits of study, and provide relevant examples of materials.

TUTORS CAN:

  • Review and explain assignments

  • Review course outlines and objectives

  • Clarify information presented by an instructor

  • Help the student understand the text and how to use it

  • Help the student identify and understand key concepts

  • Meet with instructors to develop effective tutoring strategies

TUTORS CANNOT:

  • Write or edit papers or speeches for students

  • Do the student's homework

  • Teach students material that students have not read or heard in class

  • Substitute for instructors, take attendance, proctor exams or grade papers; answer telephones or file

  • Set up, maintain, or issue materials or equipment

  • Prepare instructional materials for instructors

  • Clean labs or shops

  • Supervise or coordinate students in lab, shop, or classroom

  • Be responsible for the instruction or training of students in the safe operation of lab equipment or tools

  • A tutor is not a lab technician, monitor, office assistant or teacher aide
